34-Year-Old Security Guard Michael Ferdinand Killed at Pickering Casino
The security guard killed at Pickering Casino was Michael Ferdinand, a 34-year-old man who worked at the Pickering Casino Resort in Ontario. He was shot and killed shortly after 5 a.m. on October 9, 2023, while doing his job protecting the casino.
Michael Ferdinand was only 34 years old when he tragically lost his life. Police confirmed he was working early that morning when he encountered individuals who then shot him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical gunshot injuries but later died at a trauma centre in the Toronto area.
The suspect charged with Michael’s murder is Tyjae Nosworthy-Smith, who was just 17 years old at the time of the shooting and is now 20. He was named by police on November 8, 2023, and charged with second-degree murder. However, he has not been caught yet and is currently evading capture on a Canada-wide warrant.
Durham Regional Police said Michael was simply doing his job when he was involved with these individuals, and the shooting was not believed to have been targeted against him specifically. Police renewed their call for information in December 2025, nearly two years after the tragic incident.
To help find the suspect, police announced a $25,000 reward for anyone who provides information leading to Tyjae Nosworthy-Smith’s arrest. This reward was officially announced in December 2025, showing police remain committed to bringing the suspect to justice. Police also warned that anyone found helping the suspect evade capture will be charged under the Criminal Code and prosecuted.
