Pickering Casino Resort: CAD 500M Breaks Ground in Pickering
The Pickering Casino Resort cost CAD $500 million to build, which makes it the largest private investment ever in Pickering’s history. This huge budget covered everything from the 275 hotel rooms to the 2,500-seat arena for live concerts like the sold-out Bryan Adams show at the grand opening. The project created a major economic boost for the area, with officials expecting it to bring in CAD $1 billion in GDP impact and CAD $600 million in tax revenue over time.
The building permit alone cost the city of Pickering CAD $1.6 million, which is just a small fraction of the total construction price. Inside the resort, visitors can find 96,000 square feet of gaming space packed with 2,200 slot machines, 90 gaming tables, and 140 live dealer stadium gaming terminals. These numbers show how massive the casino is compared to smaller gaming venues in Ontario.
The casino opened its first phase on July 26, 2021, but the official grand opening with full festivities happened on April 27, 2023. During the grand opening celebration, confetti cannons fired and the casino donated CAD $50,000 to the Ajax-Pickering Hospital Foundation. Since opening in July 2021, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has already paid the City of Pickering CAD $65,008,832 in non-tax gaming revenue as of July 2025.
Great Canadian Entertainment owns and operates the resort, and they run 25 gaming venues across four Canadian provinces. The property includes nine different dining spots so guests can choose from many meal options without leaving the building. With nightly accommodation fees of CAD $49 plus a CAD $9.99 resort fee per night, the casino offers a complete entertainment destination for tourists visiting the eastern Greater Toronto Area.
